Asia Rising - Think Hong Kong

The head of a Canadian think-tank yesterday (November 30, Ottawa time) stressed the need to have a “national conversation on Asia” and encouraged Canada’s business community to “think Hong Kong rather than Panama” in his speech on Parliament Hill.

President and CEO of the Vancouver-based Asia Pacific Foundation (APF) of Canada, Mr Yuen-pau Woo, told a parliamentary breakfast meeting in Ottawa: “We are now talking the re-emergence of the re-emergence of Asia”. He pointed out that a secular trend “is evident”, with East Asia’s current gross domestic product 2.5 times larger than it was in 1985.

Hong Kong - An Education Hub in Asia

Hong Kong has stressed on developing its education services, promoting the internationalisation of its education sector, and providing an ideal environment to attract quality students, including those from overseas, according to the Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada, Ms Maureen Siu.
Speaking at the “Hong Kong 2010 – The New Legal Landscape and Economy” seminar at Toronto’s Westin Prince Hotel Friday (Oct 15), Ms Siu said human capital is Hong Kong’s most important asset. “We are pleased that Hong Kong has many top quality universities and they have produced many talents throughout the years…. Hong Kong would not have been where we are today without the contribution of our universities.”

Hong Kong Chief Executive’s Policy Address 2010

In his 2010 Policy Address, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, has laid out strategies to stabilise the property market, support low income families and strengthen links with the Mainland. Mr Tsang said on October 13 that Hong Kong’s economy has “progressively stepped out of the shadow of the global financial crisis” and on track to achieve GDP growth of between 5% and 6% this year. But he warned of increasing risks of asset-price bubbles in Asia due to the fragile recovery in the US and the on-going sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

Toronto business award winner uses Hong Kong for product development

We have free flow of information, freedom of speech, press, assembly, etc. Hong Kong has been rated as the freest economy in the world 15 years in a row now by the Fraser Institute and the U.S. -based Heritage Foundation. That is why if you go to Hong Kong, you will feel at home.” The Director of HKETO, Maureen Siu, told the guests at the award presentation ceremony of Hong Kong’s advantages.

Signing ceremony of Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation held in Beijing

The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Donald Tsang, and the Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Huang Huahua, representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Guangdong Provincial Government, signed the Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation at a signing ceremony in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Framework Agreement, which builds on years of close co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong, is the fruit of rapport and consensus created by the exchanges between the two places over the years. It is also a significant embodiment of the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”, bringing Hong Kong/Guangdong co-operation to new heights.
