About HKETO
Welcome to our website! The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government maintains Economic and Trade Offices in economies that are our major trading partners. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) (Canada) is the official representative of the HKSAR Government in Canada. Since its establishment in October 1991, the office has been actively fostering closer economic and trade ties between Hong Kong and Canada. Nowadays, we live in a world that has become global and more competitive. Driven by an urgent need to lower costs of production and to expand their markets, Canadian enterprises have been seeking opportunities in the Asia Pacific Region. In this regard, Hong Kong is an ideal partner for them to realize their ambition. The vibrant city is a strategic business hub, an international financial center, and the gateway to China. Hong Kongs role as a preferred location for regional business headquarters and a launching platform for the huge China market has been enhanced after Chinas accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). On 1 January this year, our role is further consolidated with the implementation of the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) signed between Hong Kong and the mainland in last June. The Arrangement provides that products from Hong Kong meeting rules of origin requirements can be imported tariff-free into the mainland. It also liberalizes 18 services sectors in the mainland for Hong Kong service suppliers well ahead and beyond Chinas WTO concessions. This website offers one-stop service to Canadian businesses that want to gather information about Hong Kong.
Bassanio So The main responsibilities of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office include facilitating trade negotiations and handling trade related matters with the federal government, inter-government relations with provincial and municipal governments in Canada; the promoting of Canadian investment in Hong Kong; and liaising with the media and business community. It works closely with the Canadian offices of public bodies such as the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Tourism Board in promoting Hong Kong overseas. The Office provides a comprehensive range of information on Hong Kong through speaking engagements, business workshops, seminars, newsletters, web site and inquiry service, helps make arrangements for important visitors in both directions, and organizes various activities to promote Hong Kong, including cultural and educational exchanges. It also runs, in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Journalists, a fellowship project and a student fellowship program to bring selected individuals to Hong Kong for familiarization visits. The office also facilitates Canadian investors who wish to seek business opportunities in Hong Kong and through Hong Kong in China. The Office works hand in hand with various government departments such as Invest Hong Kong to promote inward investment and bilateral trade exchanges. For further information, please contact:
