Plans for Hong Kong-made Car Speed Ahead

A collaboration between the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and China’s Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd is bringing the vision of a Hong Kong-made passenger car closer to reality. Under the arrangement, HKPC and the soon-to-be-established Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre will support Geely’s development of the vehicle and related automobile components.

Chairman of HKPC, Mr Andrew Leung, said the collaboration will benefit local industry through the expected gains in capabilities and experience in product design and technology, as well as research and development.

A successful project now could result in production of a Hong Kong-made vehicle for sale overseas or, leveraging on CEPA advantages, on the Mainland.

Expectations are that the automotive sector in the Mainland will be given a major boost in its development towards the ownership of brand names, intellectual property and localization of automotive components production.
