LegCo Delegation arrives to foster closer ties with Canada

A delegation of Hong Kong��s Legislative Council will arrive at Canada tomorrow (February 16) for a 7-day visit to enhance its ties with the Canada-Hong Kong Parliamentary Friendship Group, foster liaison with members of the Canadian Parliament and update them on the latest developments in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The delegation is led by Dr. Hon. Lui Ming-wah, leader of the delegation. Other members include Dr. Hon Philip Wong Yu-hong, deputy leader, Hon Fred Li Wah-ming, Hon Chan Kwok-keung, Hon Yeung Yiu-chung, Hon Tommy Cheung Yu-yan and Hon Michael Mak Kwok-fung.

The visit programme will begin on Monday (February 18) in Ottawa with a briefing session given by Mrs Rosanna Ure, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) on the latest political and economic developments in Canada. Apart from a courtesy call on the Mayor of Ottawa, the delegation will also meet with the Assistant Deputy Minister of Industry, members of the Canada-Hong Kong Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as representatives of the Conference Board of Canada and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

The visitors will also be meeting with officials of Environment Canada, Health Canada, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, members of the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, as well as members of the House Standing Committee on Environment. Included in the visit programme will also be a visit to the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The delegation will visit Toronto on Wednesday (February 20) when members will meet the Deputy Minister of Finance, Ontario Government, Chair of Economic Development Committee and other councillors and representatives of the local Chinese business associations. The delegation will also visit the Ontario Legislative Assembly, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), the Toronto Board of Trade , the Yee Hong Geriatric Centre, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, the Canada-Hong Kong Resource Centre of University of Toronto.

The delegation will conclude its visit on Friday (February 22) with a meeting with the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, followed by visits to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hospital for Sick Children and the Mong Sheong Centre.

The delegation will leave for Hong Kong the same evening.
