New Hong Kong Global Identity Unveiled in Edmonton

Press Release - February 28, 2003

The Brand Hong Kong Hong Kongs new global identity, which features a flying dragon, was unveiled for the first time in Edmonton today (February 28) when the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO) and the Fairchild Media Group jointly launched an event in the city to promote closer ties and business co-operation between the two places.

Comprising of the Chinese characters Hong Kong and the letters H and K, the logo clearly reflects Hong Kongs unique personality of blending East and West. The brand also conveys Hong Kongs core values, which are progressiveness, freedom, stability, opportunity and quality.

Edmonton is among the major cities where the HKETO has introduced Hong Kongs new global identity.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Building a Dynamic Hong Kong photo exhibition at the Edmonton City Centre this evening, the Director of the HKETO, Mrs Rosanna Ure, invited interested Edmonton companies, in particular those in engineering, architectural, construction and landscaping sectors, to take part in building Hong Kong as Asias world city and strengthening its role as the business and logistics hub of the Pearl River Delta, China and the Asia Pacific Region as a whole.

She said that the massive infrastructure projects planned for Hong Kong in the next decade, as depicted in the photo exhibition, would mean tremendous business opportunities for these companies.

Hong Kong is known for its vision, its efficiency and its innovation, she said.

Yet these are not enough. We need the worlds best talents and technologies to help us build Hong Kong as Asias world city.

Mrs Ure said: Companies from all over the world have participated in Hong Kongs major infrastructure projects. They have contributed to Hong Kongs success. And in return, Hong Kong has enabled them to be more successful.

She said she was pleased to launch the event in Edmonton, as Edmonton, like Hong Kong, is always in search of better ways to build a better and more dynamic city.

Joining Mrs Ure at todays opening ceremony were the Member of Legislative Assembly, Mr. Bob Maskell, who represented the Premier and Alberta Government, Director, Business Attraction of Economic Development Edmonton, Mr Kent McMullin, who represented the Edmonton City Government, and the Alberta Regional Manager of Fairchild Media Group, Ms. Christine Leung.

The program was kicked off by a business seminar co-organized by the HKETO, the Alberta Ministry of Economic Development and the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association in Edmonton at the Mackenzie Room of the Delta Edmonton Centre Suite Hotel.

Entitled A New Area of Growth for Canadian Business in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta, the seminar aimed at sharing infrastructure and insight on business opportunities in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta. Speakers include Mrs Ure, the Deputy Minister of Alberta Ministry of Economic Development, Mr Barry Mehr and other guest speakers from the private sectors.

The business seminar was followed by the launch of the large scale Building a Dynamic Hong Kong photo exhibition which showcases the citys major infrastructure achievements in the past five years including such world-renowned projects as the Hong Kong International Airport, the Tsing Ma Bridge and the new extension of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It also offers an overview of Hong Kongs exciting infrastructure plans for the next decade, which represents a total investment of CAD$120 billion on some 1,600 projects. The exhibition will remain in the Edmonton City Centre until March 13.

The event is supported by the Bank of Nova Scotia in Edmonton as its logistic sponsor.
