HKETO launches winning designs of West Kowloon Concept Competition

Press Release - March 20, 2003

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO) today (March 20) kicked off its West Kowloon Reclamation Concept Plan Competition roving exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.

Held at the Universitys Central Project Gallery, the exhibition was the first to be held in universities in the Greater Toronto Area. It was opened by the Deputy Director of the HKETO, Mr Kenneth Cheng, and the Dean of the Universitys Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, Mr Larry Richards.

The Director of the HKETO, Mrs Rosanna Ure, said the exhibition was a meaningful opportunity for exchange and experience sharing of architectural designs between Hong Kong and Canada.

The exhibition features outstanding designs from world-renowned architecture companies such as Foster and Partners (UK), architecture design teams led by Mr Philip Y.K. Liao (Hong Kong), Mr Minoru Takeyama (Japan) and Mr Alan MacDonald and Urbis-LPT (Architects) Association. These entries represent a good presence and an excellent mix of international professional architects who share their creativity to enhance Hong Kongs waterfront development, she said.

We are grateful to the University of Torontos Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design and the Universitys Association of Hong Kong Students for their support and assistance in putting the exhibition together. I hope that through the exhibition, students of the faculty will learn more about Hong Kongs architectural designs and its position as Asias world city and a premier center of arts, culture and entertainment.

In April 2001, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government launched the competition to invite conceptual proposals for the development of a prominent 40-hectare waterfront site at the southern tip of the West Kowloon Reclamation into an integrated arts, cultural and entertainment district.

Held from today until April 1, the exhibition at the Universitys Central Project Gallery (2nd Floor, Architecture Building, University of Toronto, 230 College Street, Toronto) features a set of display panels of the winning designs, a full set of the winning designs technical drawing and schematic drawings, as well as the screening of a video about the competition.

Admission is free and members of the public are welcome.
