HK and Canada renew MOU on environmental collaboration

The Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Dr Sarah Liao and the Canadian Minister of Environment, The Hon. David Anderson, today (September 11) signed a renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Environmental Collaboration between Hong Kong and Canada.
This is the second renewal of the MOU since it was first signed in 1992 to enhance collaboration in the area of environmental affairs. The first renewal was signed in 1998. The MOU is renewed every five years while a new Work Plan under the MOU will be drawn up and signed each year.
The Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR and the Department of Environment of Canada today also signed the Work Plan 2003/04 under the MOU. Signing the Work Plan were the Director of Environmental Protection, Mr Rob Law, and the Regional Director General of Environment Canada, Mr Don Fast.
The MOU , which outlines common goals and objectives, serves as a foundation for collaboration and is an important agreement in environmental protection between the two parties.
The 2003 MOU covers collaboration in
sustainable development; greenhouse gas emissions control; toxic air contaminants and their control; integrated pollution control; economic instruments for environmental protection; environmental management systems; strategic environmental assessment, wildlife conservation; waste management; other environmental technologies.
The Work Plan 2003/04 addresses a number of priority areas including exchange of experiences and sharing information on issues such as regional airshed management, environmental awareness and enforcement, stormwater management, climate change, emission trading and environmental impact assessment.
