Hong Kong infrastructure plans offer tremendous business opportunities to Calgary companies

Press Release - February 14, 2003
The massive infrastructure projects planned for Hong Kong in the next decade offer tremendous business opportunities for Calgary companies, in particular those in engineering, architectural, construction and landscaping sectors, the Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO), Mrs Rosanna Ure, said today (February 14) at Calgarys Chinook Centre.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong and Calgary Cities of Dynamism, a promotional event jointly organized by the HKETO and Fairchild Media Group, Mrs Ure invited interested Calgary companies to take part in building Hong Kong into a world-class city.

Hong Kong is known for its vision, its efficiency and its innovation, she said.

Yet this is not enough. We need the worlds best talents and technologies to help us build Hong Kong into a world-class city.

Mrs Ure said: Companies from all over the world have participated in Hong Kongs major infrastructure projects. They have contributed to Hong Kongs success. And, in return, Hong Kong has enabled them to be more successful.

Whilst Hong Kong has developed from the Pearl of the Orient in the 80s and 90s to Asias world city in the 21st Century, Calgary is unquestionably not only the Heart of the New West, but also one of the brightest rising stars in Canada and North America.

She noted that the magnificent infrastructure projects showcased in the Building a Dynamic Hong Kong photo exhibition such as the Hong Kong International Airport, Tsing Ma Bridge, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, are some of the most outstanding examples of its peoples resolve and commitment to overcome the citys physical constraint and tremendous population pressure.

Hong Kong people take pride in these achievements not only because they have won international acclaims but also because they have brought real benefits to Hong Kongs economy and livelihood, Mrs Ure added.

The Hong Kong and Calgary Cities of Dynamism project aims at promoting closer ties between Hong Kong and Calgary and updating the Calgary community on Hong Kongs latest developments and business opportunities.

At the opening ceremony, Mrs Ure, Director of the HKETO, was joined by the Hon Gary Mar, Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Wayne Cao, MLA Calgary Fort, and the Fairchild Media Groups Alberta Regional Manager, Ms Christine Leung.

The promotion features a Building a Dynamic Hong Kong photo exhibition and a Chinese Spring Lantern Festival. The former showcases the citys major infrastructure achievements in the past five years and its exciting plans for the next decade with a total investment of C$120 billion on some 1,600 projects. It will be on public display from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at Chinook Centre from February 15 to 25.

The Chinese Spring Lantern Festival, which features beautifully decorated Chinese spring lanterns and many traditional Chinese cultural performances, attracted a packed audience this evening. The riddle quiz, which features questions on Hong Kong, had attracted an overwhelming response from more than 4,000 Calgary and Edmonton residents. More than 300 of the quiz participants recorded a full score, who would be awarded prizes. All participants will enter a grand prize lucky draw of which the winner will be awarded a return flight ticket to Hong Kong.

A Remote Broadcast presented by Fairchild Radio (FM94.7) will be held tomorrow (February 15) from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at Chinook Centre. A game booth will be set up beside the Remote Broadcast booth. During the 4-hour, booth host will play games with the public at Chinook Centre to test their knowledge about Hong Kong and its close ties with Calgary.

From February 17 to 25, a phone-in Questions and Answers Quiz will take place in Fairchild Radios Good Morning Everybody Program from 8:00 am to 9:00 am to test the knowledge of the audience about Hong Kong what they have learnt from
and the Building a Dynamic Hong Kong photo exhibition. The callers who can give the correct questions within the shortest period of time will be awarded prizes.

The Hong Kong and Calgary - Cities of Dynamism promotion is sponsored by Treasure of China Seafood House, Tour East Holidays and Thalea Florist, and supported by the Hong Kong Canada Business Association, Calgary. Media sponsors are Calgary Sun, Trend Weekly and Sing Tao Daily.
