(Caption) Apart from speaking on the anti-racial discrimination legislation at the Hong Kong University (HKU) Alumni AGM, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Shelley Lee (left), also talked about 2004 Legco Election that was held on September 12.   She said there was an all-time high records of over 1.78 million registered electors casting their votes on the polling day, representing a turnout of 55.63%, demonstrating public confidence in Hong Kong's electoral system.  With regards to the increase in seats won by Pan-democratic camp, Shelley Lee informed audience that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government would work closely with all Legco members, as in the past, irrespective of their political background. 

Ms Lee also talked about HKU graduates in 2004 Legco election - that 38 of the 162 candidates were HKU graduates, among which 20 of these 38 were elected.  She continued to say that China's impressive development had attracted unprecedented attention from the international community.  Hong Kong, being a logical portal to Greater China and Asia, plays a crucial part to the success of multi-nationals in the face of knowledge industry. The long established institutions of higher learning in Hong Kong were  uniquely positioned and fully capable of contributing to the training of human capital for the region.

香港民政事務局常任秘書長訪問温市

圖一: 在温哥華出席香港大學舊生會年會上，香港民政事務局常任秘書長李麗娟(左)除在會上談及香港反種族歧視條例外，並提及於九月十二日舉行的二ｏｏ四年立法會選舉。她說今次選舉有破天荒的投票紀錄。有一百七十八萬的登記選民投票，代表了55.63%的投票率。反映了公眾對香港選舉制度的信心。在談及有關泛民主派嬴獲新增議席時，常任秘書長向與會人士說香港特別行政區政府將一如以住，無分政治背景，與所有立法局議員緊密合作。

常任秘書長亦談及香港大學畢業生在二ｏｏ四年立法會選舉中，於162名候選人中有38人為港大畢業生。而在此38人中，有20人獲選。她又續說中國的發展已獲得世界各國史無前例的注意。香港作為中國內地及亞洲的橋樑，在國際知識領域上扮演着一個舉足輕重的角色。香港長期已有的專上教育在亞洲有着獨特的地位，並可在人力資源上作出充份的貢獻。
