International forensic summit reinforces Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s world city

Press Release - August 15, 2005

Over 1,200 delegates in the field of forensic sciences will gather in Hong Kong this month for the 17th Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) to discuss forensic issues around the world, positioning for a quality future, and future partnership and collaborations.

The meeting, to be held from August 21 to 26 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, will also include the first International Forensic Summit on August 22, bearing the theme “Justice Through Science”. The summit will start with presentations on selected topics, supplemented by questions-and-answers in a panel format. Panelists include eminent forensic practitioners and senior members of relevant professional bodies, international organizations, forensic institutions, educational establishments, and forensic service providers from all over the world.

The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Canada, Mr Bassanio So, said he is pleased that the IAFS choose to hold such a high-profile international summit in Hong Kong. “The Conference that is to take place in Hong Kong reinforces its position as a venue for international conventions and a world business center, where industry leaders exchange ideas and make important decisions,” he added.

The “Justice Through Science” summit will cover topics such as “DNA: Genetic Fingerprints and Beyond”, “Drugs of Abuse - A Global Perspective”, and “Forensic Science in China”, etc. A large-scale technical exhibition will also be held, introducing the latest products and services to the participants.

The IAFS meeting serves as a worldwide hub for exchanging ideas, and an open forum for discussing forensic issues. Please visit www.iafs2005.com for details.

The forum is sponsored by the Government Laboratory and the Hong Kong Police Force.
