“The Art of Nancy Chu Woo” reflects East-meets-West

Press Release - October 17, 2007

A painting exhibition by celebrated Hong Kong colourist Nancy Chu Woo was opened today (Wednesday) as one of the many events that the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada has held to mark the 10th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China.

“The Art of Nancy Chu Woo” was co-presented in Toronto by HKETO Director Mr Bassanio So, and Member of Parliament Hon Joe Volpe. Sponsored by the RBC Financial Group and Tour East Holidays, the exhibition had its premiere at the Parliament Hill in Ottawa earlier this week. The Toronto exhibition is staged at the Carrier Art Gallery of the Columbus Cenre.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr So said he is delighted to have such an internationally renowned artist and one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated colorists to come to Canada to showcase her unique “jewel-like” painting style, which “represents a brand new form of modern Chinese art, as well as a fusion of the east and the west – from past to present.”

“Her paintings are chromatic visions that transcend the antithesis of representational form and expression,” said Mr So. “With the charm of the orient and the grace of the west, Nancy truly is a representation of Hong Kong, Asia’s world city, which enjoys the richness of both cultures.”

The Hon Joe Volpe praised Nancy’s work as “a wonderful combination of technique inspired in an Oriental environment and married to the classical European expression of art.” He also thanked the exhibition’s organizing committee headed by Mr John Man and Mrs Irene So.

As the Title Sponsor of the exhibition, Mr Ojan Jamkhou of the RBC Financial Group said given the strong ties between Hong Kong and Canada, and RBC’s long and committed history in Hong Kong, “RBC is passionate about Hong Kong and China and the ways we can strengthen our already strong business and cultural ties.”

“The Art of Nancy Chu Woo” art exhibition, featuring more than 30 of Mrs Woo’s paintings, is open to the public until next Monday (Oct 22). The Carrier Art Gallery is located at 901 Lawrence Avenue West at Dufferin. The Gallery opens Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm.
