A recent trade
mission led by Canada's Agriculture Minister, the Hon. Gerry
Ritz, to Hong Kong was concluded with the signing of an
agreement-in-principle that immediately expands key export
opportunities for Canadian beef, and sets out a clear timetable
to open the Hong Kong market to all commercially-significant
Canadian beef exports.
Minister Ritz and Hong Kong's Secretary for Food and Health, Dr.
York Chow, agreed to a staged process that instantly expands
opportunities for key Canadian beef exports. After exporters
meet Hong Kong's requirements, all commercially-significant
Canadian beef exports will have access to the Hong Kong market.
Minister Ritz said Canada will work closely with Hong Kong
authorities to ensure the city's high quality and safety
standards are met. The Canada Beef Export Federation estimates
that the improved access could mean an increase in Canadian beef
exports to Hong Kong by as much as CAN$26 million, almost
doubling the current exports. |
