A century's worth of Hong Kong film-making was honoured at this
year's Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. The
celebration, jointly organized with the Hong Kong Economic &
Trade Office (HKETO) in Canada, included a pre-show reception
which included a display of "vintage" posters and trailers of
Hong Kong films. Director of the HKETO, Ms Maureen Siu, was
excited about Hong Kong's participation in the Fantasia
International Film Festival, calling it "a valuable platform to
foster appreciation of Asian films and culture in Montreal."
The
highlight of the celebration was the Canadian premiere of "The
Warlords", starring Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro. "The
Warlords" won Best Picture at the 2008 Hong Kong Film Awards and
at the Golden Horse Awards. Other Hong Kong films screened at
the festival included "Yip Man", "Tactical Unit - Comrades in
Arms", "Coweb", and "Legendary Assassin".
"Hong Kong is a hub for the Chinese film industry," Ms Siu said.
"And the breeding ground for some of the world's best-known
producers, directors and actors. It also offers a wide range of
film production and post-production services and facilities. So
it's no surprise that film companies from around the world are
exploiting this Hong Kong advantage." Ms Siu also pointed out
that Hong Kong's annual Filmart is a well-attended major event
that brings together film industry people from around the world
to explore collaboration. This year's Filmart attracted over 500
exhibitors from 28 countries and regions. The next Hong Kong
Filmart will be held in March 2010. |
