During the Second World War, the Japanese invasion interrupted British rule in Hong Kong. The unrest in China in 1940's resulted in a huge influx of Chinese into Hong Kong. The population increased fivefold to 2.5 million between 1945 and 1955. The massive postwar immigration turned a new page in Hong Kong's history.
