NATIVE-SPEAKING ENGLISH TEACHERS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN HONG KONG
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is recruiting native-speaking English teachers (NET) to teach the subject of English in Government and Government-subvented secondary schools (equivalent to US Grades 7 - 12) and schools for students with special educational needs.
The teachers will be appointed under a Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Scheme. The aim of the Scheme is to upgrade the English language proficiency of the students in the context of Chinese-medium teaching.
DUTIES OF NETS
The duties of NETs should cover the following:
- To be responsible for classroom teaching and assessment;
- To provide support to the English Panel Chairperson, including assisting in curriculum development and preparation of teaching materials;
- To assist in conducting extra-curricular activities related to the English language, e.g. speech, drama, debates, choral speaking and extensive reading;
- To assist in running oral activities for students after school;
- To assist in setting up an English corner in the school where students can come together to practise oral English and read English books under their guidance; and
- To act as an English language resource person for other teachers in school.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
- NETs should be native-speaker of English or possess native-speaker English competence.
- They should also possess -
- a Bachelor's degree majoring in English Language or Linguistics or English Literature or English Studies or a Modern Language; AND
- at least 2 years' post-graduate experience of teaching English preferably as a second or foreign language at secondary level or above; AND
- a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent OR
- a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at the diploma level.
- Candidates who possess a Bachelor's degree in other academic subjects AND a PGDE or equivalent AND a TEFL/TESL qualification at the diploma level AND have at least 2 years' post-graduate experience of teaching English at secondary level or above may be considered.
- For appointment in special schools, preference will be given to candidates who have special education training and/or experience in teaching students with special educational needs.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT & SALARY
- The appointment will be from 16 August 2001 to 15 August 2003.
- The salary scale is HK$17,100 to HK$46,485 (approx. *US$2,183 to US$ 5,936) per month (12 months/ year) plus 15% gratuity on completion of contract.
- Appointees with a PGDE or equivalent (not TEFL/TESL qualifications) will enter at HK$19,055 (approx. *US$2,433) per month.
- Those without a PGDE will enter at the minimum of the pay scale and will not be permitted to proceed beyond HK$22,075 (approx. *US$2,819) per month.
- Salary increments may be awarded for recognized relevant post-degree teaching experience.
- The salary to be offered is subject to the prevailing conditions at the time the offer of appointment is made.
- Passage, baggage and medical allowances and a special allowance of HK$13,000 (*US$1,660) per month are provided for appointees whose normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong (A teacher will not be eligible for the special allowance if he/she or his/her spouse is already receiving the same or housing allowance from his/her own employer).

Note:
It is a statutory requirement under the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance (MPFSO) (Cap. 485) that all employees in Hong Kong have to enrol in an MPF Scheme. The contribution rate for both the employer and the employee prescribed in the prevailing provisions of the MPFSO is 5% of the employee's income (excluding Special Allowance), subject to the maximum level of income of HK$20,000 per month. The contract gratuity payable to the NET plus the MPF contribution made by the employer in respect of the NET will be equal to 15% of the basic salary, which shall be at the same level as before the implementation of the MPF system.
