PRESS RELEASE - February 26, 1999 Native-Speaking English Teachers Sought The Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government, Mr. Donald Tong, today (February 26) urged qualified Canadians interested in teaching English in Hong Kong to submit applications to the SAR's Education Department as soon as possible. He said the recruitment of Native-speaking English Teachers (NET) in overseas countries is part of the department's drive to improve the standard and proficiency in the use of English in Government and Government-subvented schools. "The teachers will be appointed under the NET scheme which was introduced last September," Mr. Tong said. "The NETs will teach English to Chinese ESL (English as Second Language) students at the secondary level (equivalent to Canadian grades 7 - 12) and help create an environment for students to speak English in school, "The deadline for submitting applications is March 31, 1999," Mr. Tong said. Candidates who wish to apply for the NET posts should be native-speaker of English or have native-speaker English competence and should possess:
The appointment will be on a 2-year contract. The salary scale is about C$46,026 to C$96,927 per annum plus 15% gratuity on satisfactory completion of contract. Passage, baggage and medical allowances, and a special allowance of about C$2,390 per month (subject to revision) are provided for appointees whose normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong. Appointees with a Post-graduate Certificate in Education or equivalent will enter at C$50,714 per annum. Those without such certificate will enter at the minimum of the pay scale and will not be permitted to proceed beyond C$58,545 per annum. Increments may be awarded for recognized relevant post-degree teaching experience.
