Press Release - June 25, 2001

New global brand Hong Kong unveiled at Winnipeg

An exhibition which features the new global brand positioning Hong Kong as "Asia's world city" was unveiled today (June 25) by Mrs Rosanna Ure, Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre.

"The new visual brand identity, which is a stylized dragon, symbolizes Hong Kong's dynamism and creativity and serves to communicate its link to a historical and cultural icon," said Mrs Rosanna Ure.

The unique characteristic of Hong Kong - East meets West - is reflected in the body of the powerful and energetic dragon by incorporating the Chinese characters for "Hong Kong" and the letters "H" and "K". The dragon's smooth, fluid shape conveys a sense of movement and speed, signifying that Hong Kong is forever changing.

Complemented by the tagline "Asia's world city", the visual identity communicates Hong Kong's role as one of the world's most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities. The dynamic and contemporary rendering captures Hong Kong's passion to be daring and innovative, and a can-do approach towards bringing visionary ideas to life. The new branding was launched on May 10, 2001 in Hong Kong and is being promoted in Canada since June this year.

"With its potentials and the favourable investment environment, Hong Kong has become a regional business hub, and a natural gateway to the mainland of China and Asia. Hong Kong's strategic location in the Asia Pacific Region, its commitment to maintaining the rule of law, as well as its openness and diversity will continue to be the key assets of the city," added Mrs Ure.

In addition, Hong Kong's position as Asia's world city is being further strengthened by programmes to enhance the city's hard and soft infrastructures.

The proximity and close connection with mainland China has made Hong Kong the biggest trading partner of the giant. Hong Kong's role as an ally to overseas corporations looking for opportunities to tap on the potentially vast Chinese market is indisputable. With China's imminent accession to the World Trade Organization, Hong Kong has become the ideal location for many Canadian enterprises which have plans to set up their business in Asia. In fact, as of mid-2000, over 3,000 international corporations have established their regional headquarters and offices in Hong Kong.

While in Winnipeg, Mrs Ure also took the opportunity to call on the Hon. Peter Liba, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba; Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade and Mines, Hugh Eliasson, Government of Manitoba and Mayor Glen Murray, City of Winnipeg. They were briefed on the latest developments in Hong Kong, including the global campaign to position Hong Kong as Asia's world city.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, which serves as a link between Hong Kong and the Canadian business community, was opened in 1991. Its main function is to facilitate exchanges between Hong Kong and Canada, with a particular focus on trade and economic relationships.
