EU grants visa free access for Hong Kong SAR passport holders
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport holders have been granted visa free access for a maximum stay of three months when visiting the 13 European Union (EU) countries.
The Chief Executive, Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, welcomed the announcement of the adoption of a Council Regulation by the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the EU.
"This is a milestone achievement in our efforts to enhance travel convenience for HKSAR passport holders."
"It is also a definitive vote of confidence of the EU in the 'One Country, Two Systems' arrangement," Mr. Tung said.
Canadian visitors to Hong Kong enjoy visa free access for a stay of three months while HKSAR passport holders are given a maximum stay of six months upon entry to Canada.
Last year, there were 250,000 Canadian travellers to Hong Kong which represented an increase of 11.9 per cent over 1999.
At present, including Canada, a total of 73 countries grant visa free access to HKSAR passport holders.
When the visa free treatment accorded by the EU comes into effect in April, the list of countries will grow to 86 countries.
