Dateline Hong Kong: 2 Fellowships Awarded

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government in Canada, in association with the Canadian Association of Journalists, is pleased to announce that fellowships are being awarded to two Canadian journalists. They are Catherine Pope of BCTV and Janis Cleugh of Tri-City News, Port Coquitlam. Applications were judged by two judges from the Canadian Association of Journalists.

The purpose of the fellowship is for journalists to acquaint themselves with Hong Kong SAR. The two fellowships awarded will see the winners travelling to Hong Kong for a period of not more than 10 days, prior to March 31, 2000.

The advertisement for the fellowship which appeared in Media magazine Vol.6 #2 required those interested to send in an application. Included in the application was a resume, a written proposal laying out what is to be achieved, and a written statement of support, including a letter of intent from the editor/producer to broadcast/publish the stories/articles in their respective newspaper, magazine, radio or television station. The proposal can concentrate on any area of life in Hong Kong, including, but not limited to: business, trade, politics, infrastructure development, tourism, housing, education, culture and environment.

Funding for this project which is organised every year comes from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the SAR Government.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Canada will assist in arranging for the two fellowship winners to visit various points of interest, and meet with people of diverse views, and cultural backgrounds, such as: Politicians, corporate CEO's and senior government officials.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office is the only official representative of the SAR Government in Canada. The Office is responsible for the economic, commercial and public relations interests of Hong Kong across Canada. The Office also facilitates trade negotiations and handles trade related matters, inter-government relations with the Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments in Canada, the promotion of Canadian investment in Hong Kong, and liaison with the media and business community.

The Office provides a comprehensive range of information on Hong Kong through speaking engagements, business workshops, seminars, newsletters, web site and inquiry service.
