Tourism spending soars

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced that the Total Expenditure Associated to Inbound Tourism increased by 3.2 per cent to HK$162 billion (CAD$21 billion) in 2009 despite the impact of the global economic downturn.

The increase in tourism expenditure is driven by the greater number of Mainland visitors and their higher spending on shopping. The individual visits by Shenzhen residents and the robust economic growth of Mainland China mainly contribute to this encouraging growth.

Meanwhile, the HKTB also recorded an increase of 30% on the MICE visitor arrivals in the first quarter of 2010 as benefited from the recovering global economy.
