Hong Kong Action Films
Hong Kong, with a population of 6.8 million, has a very vibrant and prosperous film industry which has gained international recognition. Above all, Hong Kong's action film regularly makes headline news in the international film arena.
Hong Kong film industry excels by producing quality films with diverse themes, featuring superb cinematography and dramatic performances. Among the different types of films produced in Hong Kong, the 'action film' is arguably the most unique and, internationally, the most acclaimed 'export' of Hong Kong.
Over the past few decades, Hong Kong's action films, now commonly known as 'Kung Fu' movies, has undergone various stages of development - from cinematic depictions which relied on stage bound, artificial and inauthentic elements in the 50s and 60s, to films depicting proper martial arts with the use of genuine weapons and authentic Chinese kung fu in the 70s and 80s, to productions which relied on the adoption of wires technique to create the illusion of flying in early 1990s and to movies which use computer animations nowadays.
To promote Hong Kong's action films to the Vancouver community, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) will present a selection of nine representative Hong Kong Kung Fu films. The event, entitled 'Hong Kong Action Films - Turning Fantasy to Reality', will be held from October 25 to October 31. Co-organized with Pacific Cinematheque, the film series will showcase Hong Kong action films produced from the 70s to the present day, providing a brief recap of the evolution and development of the city's action films.
