Cantonese Opera
Cantonese opera is a traditional performing art typical in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces and is very popular in Hong Kong.
Its colourful and glittering costumes, stunning headdress and ornaments, coupled with graceful movements and gesture, as well as the poetic phrases and heart-rendering melodious songs, make it an enchanting experience for both Chinese and western audience.
Based on Chinese history and famous Chinese classical works, most of the opera stories generally revolve around moral values such as loyalty, filial piety, patriotism and faithfulness.
To promote the arts of Cantonese opera, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has set up a Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall (http://www.heritagemuseum.gov.hk/english/exhibition.htm). It resembles a shed theatre setting with a typical backstage display, allowing visitors a closer look at this unique art. What's more, while costumes, make-up and documents are showcased, the Museum's archives offer visitors the chance to sample some of important performances in the past.
To promote the cultural ties between Hong Kong and Canada, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) will be staging 'An Enchanting Evening of Cantonese Opera', as an integral part of 'A Cultural Rendezvous with Hong Kong', in Montreal on October 2.
The performance will feature a series of three short plays, namely 'The Tragedy of Princess Cheung Ping', 'The Tale of the White Dragon Gorge' and 'The Romance of the Goddess Yuen in the Ninth Heaven'.
