Railway Transportation in Hong Kong

The Kowloon-Canton Railway
Operated by The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, The Kowloon Canton Railway (East Rail) connects Hung Hom in Kowloon with Lo Wu. With its double-tracked electrified line completed in 1983, the East Rail has a total of 351 cars which assembled into 12-car trains and carries about 716,000 passengers daily.

The East Rail also operates inter-city passenger services to Guangzhou on its own train and provides access for other inter-city trains running to and from Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. Five pairs of through trains are operated daily between Kowloon and Guangdong cities. Through train services to and from Beijing and Shanghai are also operated on alternate days.

Standard class fares range from C$0.7 (HK$3.5) to C$1.8 (HK$9) for local journeys and C$4 (HK$20) to C$6.6 (HK$33) for journeys to Lo Wu according to the distance travelled.

Light Rail Transit (LRT) System
The Light Rail Transit (LRT) System, which is owned and operated by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, came into service in September 1988. The LRT system connects the towns of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long in the northwestern part of the New Territories. While two Tuen Mun Extensions began operation in 1991 and 1992 respectively, the network was extended to Tin Shui Wai in 1995.

The system comprises 31.75 kilometres of double track, 119 single-deck light rail vehicles and 57 stops. It is supported by feeder bus services with adult single fares range from C$0.8 (HK$4) to C$1.2 (HK$5.8). About 385,000 passengers travel daily on the system.
