Transportation
and Logistics Service
Hong
Kong is one of the key transportation and logistics hubs in Asia-Pacific. As a
free port with strong support services in telecommunications, legal, banking
and insurance, it plays a pre-eminent role in this fast growing and dynamic
industry. Hong Kong's advantages also include its ideal geographic location,
which is close to the major economies in Asia, and its superb natural
deep-water harbour.
Following mainland China's continuous economic growth, Hong Kong's
transportation and logistics industry increasingly serves its rapidly
developing hinterland. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) - with the commercial
centres of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Dongguan -is one of the most robust
manufacturing centres in the world and a major portion of the PRD's export
cargo flows through Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's airport is the largest international
air cargo handler in the world with a throughput of 3.6 million tonnes in 2006.
Hong Kong serves over 80 scheduled airlines, providing more than 5,000 flights per
week to more than 150 destinations. Half of the world's population live within
five hours'flight time.
Hong Kong's seaport handled 23.23 million TEUs in 2006. The volume of containers
carried by ocean-going vessels is forecast to grow to over 40 million TEUs by
2020.
Hong Kong is the base for
many of the leading international transportation companies. These include major
players in the container shipping industry such as Maersk Line, MSC, CMA CGM,
COSCO and CSCL;
and leading companies in the freight forwarding industry such as Nippon Express,
Panalpina, Bax Global, Yamato and Sagawa. International air courier service
providers like DHL, FedEx, UPS and TNT also have regional offices and/or large
operations in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Government takes a strong interest in the development of the local
transportation and logistics industry. Developed by DHL, the Express Cargo
Terminal at the Hong Kong International Airport has been in operation since
August 2004.
The Hong Kong International
Airport long term forecast estimates that by 2025, HKIA will serve 80 million
passengers, handle 8 million tonnes of cargo and 490,000 aircraft movement each
year.
Hong Kong, in terms of tonnage, is the fifth largest shipping register in the
world.
The Government has set up the Logistics Development Council (LOGS COUNCIL), which
is responsible for the overall coordination of logistics by involving the public
sector, commercial interests and academia. This initiative is expected to
maintain and strengthen Hong Kong's position as a transport and logistics hub.

Why Hong Kong ?
Hong
Kong offers unrivalled growth opportunities for companies in the
transportation and logistics industry. In particular, proximity to Mainland
China makes it an attractive investment destination for multinational
companies.
China's recent accession to the WTO will significantly increase its global
trade volume. The UN estimates that, China will be Asia's largest market in
terms of container shipping volume. A significant portion of this trade will
be moved through Hong Kong. This growth in container shipping will also
increase the demand for supporting services in Hong Kong such as chartering,
fleet management, marine insurance, ship repairing and bunkering and others.
Furthermore, the Closer
Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA)
between Hong Kong
and mainland China allows qualified Hong Kong companies to set up wholly-owned
entities in the Mainland to provide transportation services in logistics,
storage and warehousing, road transport, freight forwarding and maritime
transport, enjoying liberalization benefits which are more and/or earlier than
the WTO commitment.
The growth of the
Pearl
River Delta (PRD)
into a high-tech
manufacturing base has intensified the need for an efficient logistics and air
transportation network. Hong Kong is well positioned to capture this market.
In order to accelerate the transportation and logistics flow between Hong Kong
and the PRD, the Hong Kong- Guangdong Co-ordination and Co-operation Unit has
been established as a fast-track facilitator.
