Hong Kong Institute of Education students visit HKETO

Press Release - Aug 3, 2000
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) today hosted a reception at its office to bid farewell to 17 students from the Hong Kong Institute of Education. They are attending a special 10-week summer English immersion programme at the York University in Toronto, Ontario.

HKETO Acting Director Eddie Cheung briefed the students on the role and responsibilities of HKETO and wished them tremendous success in their future academic endeavors.

"Hong Kong is an international financial and business centre. It is imperative to maintain a high standard of English. English teachers play a pivotal role in the future development of Hong Kong," he said.

It is the second year that the Hong Kong Institute of Education and York University had worked together to provide the English immersion programme. The students have completed their first year of a four-year Bachelor of Education degree at the Institute and all aspire to become teachers of English.

The 17 students, who have been in Toronto since May 26, have spent 10 busy weeks of university classes, school visits, teaching practice and extra-curricular activities with Canadian university students.
