Press Release - June 24, 2001
As one of the sponsors of this popular event, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) set up a booth where face paintings of the dragon were offered to hundreds of holiday makers as well as paddlers in the exciting races.
Mrs. Rosanna Ure, Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office told the enthusiastic crowd at the opening ceremony that the dragon boat race was a popular cultural and sports event in Hong Kong and that the champion of last year's Toronto International Dragon Boat Race would be competing in Hong Kong next week.
"The dragon is a powerful symbol in Chinese culture. That is the reason why we have reinterpreted and modernised the dragon and turned it into the icon of our campaign to position Hong Kong as Asia's world city.
"The global strategy is being unveiled in Toronto earlier in June and will be promoted throughout Canada, " she said.
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, which serves as a link between Hong Kong and the Canadian business community, was opened in 1991. Its main function is to facilitate exchanges between Hong Kong and Canada, with a particular focus on trade and economic relationships.
