Screening of vintage film “The Orphan” concludes the Hong Kong Arts Festival

Press Release - November 29, 2001

Organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), the two-week Hong Kong Arts Festival came to a close today (November 29) with the screening of a vintage film 'The Orphan', featuring young Bruce Lee, at the ROM Theatre of the Royal Ontario Museum.

"By showing this film as the concluding event of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, we would like to pay tribute to our international movie star Bruce Lee and all those involved in Hong Kong's film industry," said Rosanna Ure, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada).

Produced in 1960, 'The Orphan' features young Bruce Lee as the title character, who struggled to find the right direction for his life, aided by a teacher. It turned out that the two had a closer, more meaningful relationship.

"The film is a vivid depiction of post-war Hong Kong where people had to struggle for their survival. But just as Bruce Lee has developed from a talented teenage actor to a hero on the silver screen, Hong Kong's film industry has broken out of its domestic market and taken its film to an international audience," she added.

The screening of 'The Orphan' was one of the five components of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which comprises a photo exhibition, a film festival, a filmmakers' seminar and a ballet performance.

In response to overwhelming public interest in the film, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, assisted by the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, will organize two additional screenings at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto (5183 Sheppard Ave. East) on Saturday, December 8 at 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Admission is free but reservation is required. For reservation please call Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) at 416-924-5544 (Ext. 214) or Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto at 416-292-9293 (Ext. 232 / 240).

In additional to the movie screening, the 'Living in Hong Kong – Past and Present' photo exhibition, being staged at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, will also be extended to December 9, 2001 in response to popular demand. The exhibition depicts the life of Hong Kong in 1950s and nowadays.
