Three Canadian Journalists awarded Dateline Hong Kong Fellowship
Press Release - September 28, 2001 The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in Canada, in association with the Canadian Association of Journalists, is pleased to announce today (September 28) that fellowships are being awarded to three Canadian journalists.
They are: Peter Verburg of Canadian Business, Bryant Avery of the Edmonton Journal and Larraine Andrews, a freelance journalist.
Applications were judged by three judges selected by the Canadian Association of Journalists. The judges were Roger Bird, Carleton University, Michelle MacAfee, Canadian Association of Journalists and Liane Faulder, a fellowship winner (2000).
Winners were selected based on the strength of their applications, which included story proposals and confirmation from supervisors that their work would be published or broadcast upon their return to Canada. Projects can concentrate on any area of life in Hong Kong, including, but not limited to, business, trade, politics, infrastructure development, tourism, housing, education, culture and environment.
Funding for this annual project comes from the Hong Kong SAR Government. The purpose of the fellowship is for journalists to acquaint themselves with Hong Kong. The three fellowships awarded will see the winners traveling to Hong Kong for a period of six days, prior to March 31, 2002.
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Canada will assist in arranging for the three fellowship winners to visit various points of interest, and meet with people of diverse views, and cultural backgrounds, such as politicians, corporate CEO's and senior government officials. The advertisement for the fellowship which appeared in the Canadian Association of Journalists Media magazine Vol. 7#4, Vol.8#1, the CAJ Web site and list-serv required those interested to send in an application.
Previous recipients of the Fellowship included Liane Faulder of Edmonton Journal; Bob Neufeld of MD Management (publisher of the Canadian Medical Association Journal); Catherine Pope of BCTV; Janis Cleugh of Tri-City News; Stephen Ewart of Calgary Herald; Theresa Lalonde of CBC Radio in Windsor; Tony Wong of Toronto Star and Kwoi Gin, a freelancer.
