Recruitment of Native English-speaking Teachers for Primary and Secondary Schools in Hong Kong

The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is recruiting native English-speaking teachers (NET) for schools in Hong Kong for the 2003-04 school year commencing on August 16, 2003.

The recruitment is part of a NET Scheme targeting to recruit over 200 NETs to teach the English language to Chinese English as a Second Language students and assist in teacher and curriculum development in primary schools (equivalent to US Grades 1 - 6) and secondary schools (equivalent to US Grades 7 - 12) and schools for students with special educational needs in Hong Kong.

Announcing this today (October 18), the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), Mrs Rosanna Ure said: "Similar to previous years, we are launching the 2003-04 recruitment drive in overseas countries to look for native-speaking English teachers. Canada has always been one of the major sources of applications since the scheme first started in 1998-99 and the number of applications has been on an increase,"

In the school year of 2000-2002, the number of Canadian applications received is 246.

"We hope that Canadians who would like to pursue a teaching career in Hong Kong could make use of the opportunity by sending in their applications," she added.

Candidates who wish to apply for the NET posts must be native English speakers or possess native-speaker English competence and should have:

For secondary schools

(i) a bachelor��s degree, preferably majoring in English Language or English
Literature or English Studies or a Modern Language; and

(ii) a Post-graduate Certificate in Education or equivalent; and

(iii) a Teaching English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at diploma level; and

(iv) at least 1 year��s experience of teaching English at secondary level or above.

For primary schools

(i) a bachelor��s degree, preferably majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or a Modern Language; and/or

(ii) a recognized teacher training qualification, preferably in Primary
Education or TEFL/TESL; and

(iii) preferably experience in TESL/TEFL at primary school level.

For appointment in special schools, preference will be given to candidates who have special education training and/or experience in teaching students with special educational needs.

The appointment of NET will be on a two-year contract, subject to renewal after expiry. Subject to satisfactory completion of the contract, the NETs will receive a gratuity of 15% of total basic salary on completion of the contract.

The salary scales are: for secondary NET posts - from HK$205,200 to HK$557,820 (approx. CAN$41,437 to CAN$112,645, based on exchange rate HK$4.952 = CAN$1); and for primary NET posts - from HK$205,200 to HK$464,340 (approx. CAN$41,437 to CAN$93,768) per annum. Increments will be awarded for recognized post-degree teaching experience. A special allowance of HK$13,000 (approx. CAN$2,625) per month, free passages and baggage and medical allowances will be provided.
