Canadian Student Journalists Win Fellowship

The HKETO and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) have announced the results of the Student Journalists Hong Kong Fellowship 2002/03.

Two Canadian journalism students, Myles Leslie, of the University of British Columbia, and Lyla Miller, of Carleton University, were selected. They will travel to Hong Kong before the end of March 2004 to work on stories for publication or broadcast when they return to Canada.

They were chosen by a panel of adjudicators from the CAJ’s National Board of Directors. The judges were Saleem Khan, a Toronto-based independent journalist, Trudi Beutel, Richmond-news in British Columbia, and Karen Pauls of CBC Radio in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The students won the fellowships on the strength of their applications, which included story proposals and confirmation that they would publish or broadcast their stories about Hong Kong in the local media, their university/school journals or newsletters.

The HKETO Director, Mrs Rosanna Ure, said, “The HKETO is pleased to know that the Fellowship has attracted such strong interest among Canadian student journalists and we look forward to welcoming the winners to Hong Kong – Asia’s world city.”

President of the CAJ, Mr Rob Cribb, said: “It’s a pleasure to be able to recognize some of Canada’s excellent young journalists and give them a rare opportunity to stretch themselves, think about new ideas and get exposure to a different culture.”

Funding for this project is provided by the HKSAR Government.
