Tourist Arrivals Set New Record

Hong Kong reported a growth of more than 20% in visitor arrivals in 2002, setting a new record of 16.57 million. Hong Kong’s tourism industry has started 2003 in equally strong shape, with January arrivals totalling 1,545,978, the highest January figure to date and a 31% growth over January 2002.

According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), every market showed positive growth. South and Southeast Asia arrivals rose by 15.1%, while arrivals from Europe, Africa and the Middle East rose 9%. Mainland China again led the way, with 750,929 arrivals, a year-on-year increase of 65.1%.

Business traffic from short-haul markets was stimulated by major trade shows such as the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair and Hong Kong Fashion Week.

HKTB cautioned that, despite the encouraging start to the year, it was too early to assume that such strong performance could be maintained.
