Business Expectations Mixed

According to a new Quarterly Business Tendency Survey released by the HKSAR Census and Statistics Department in February, the volume of business/output in Hong Kong is expected to go up in the first quarter of 2003 in respect to these sectors: manufacturing; restaurants and hotels; transport and related services; banks, financing and insurance; and real estate, business services and telecommunications sectors.

The volume of business/output in the construction sector and in the wholesale, retail and import/export trades is expected to go down over the same period.

The survey gathers views on short-term business outlook from senior management of about 400 prominent establishments in the major economic sectors. Views collected are limited only to the direction, and not the magnitude, of change.

Survey results are published in greater detail in the “Report on Quarterly Business Tendency Survey, Q1 2003”. This publication may be purchased online at www.statisticalbookstore.gov.hk.
