Unemployment and Underemployment Statistics Released

Labour force statistics released on March 17 by the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department indicate that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.4% (provisional) in December 2002 – February 2003. Yet, the underemployment rate decreased from 3.1% to 2.9% (provisional) over the same periods of comparison.

Comparing December 2002 – February 2003 with November 2002 – January 2003, increases in the unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) were seen mainly in construction, manufacturing and transport, more than offsetting the decreases seen in the retail trade and hotels.

As for the underemployment rate, the decline was concentrated in construction and in manufacturing.

The total labour force fell by around 17,800 from 3,517,800 in November 2002 – January 2003 to 3,500,000 (provisional) in December 2002 – February 2003. Total employment decreased to a larger extent, by around 27,200, from 3,272,200 to 3,245,000 (provisional) between the two periods.

The number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) went up from 245,600 in November 2002 – January 2003 to 256,000 in December 2002 – February 2003. On the other hand, the number of underemployed persons fell from 107,800 to 101,000 (provisional).
