HK International Airport’s traffic growth in first two months of 2003

Passenger throughput in January and February at the HKIA grew by almost 6%. Passenger throughput in January and February grew by almost 6%, and cargo 13%, compared with the same period last year at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The number of flight movements grew more than 11% in the same period.

The two months’ figures were combined because of the effect of the Lunar New Year holidays, when passenger traffic increased while cargo activity slowed down. As the holidays began in February last year and the end of January this year, month-on-month comparisons are difficult. A more accurate picture appears when the two months are combined:

There were more than 5.54 million passengers over the two months this year, a rise of nearly 6%. Cargo was 358,000 tonnes, a rise of just over 13%, while there were 34,770 flight movements, an increase of 11.4% compared with 2002.

During February alone, passenger traffic was 2,706,000, a very slight decline from 2,712,000 passenger in February 2002. Cargo rose 7.4% to 160,000 tonnes and aircraft movements were up 8.4% to 16,660.
