SCIT: The Future is Wireless

Japanese Vice-Minister for Policy Co-ordination of Home Affairs, Posts & Telecommunications Kozo Takahara and hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology John Tsang (right) signed the first arrangement on co-operation in the development of information and communications technology.

The Telecom InfoTechnology Forum in March brought to Hong Kong the Wireless Development Centre’s counterparts from Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom to explore further co-operation opportunities.

Speaking at the opening of the Forum, the Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr John Tsang, pointed out that Asia has led the spectacular growth in wireless communications demand. “At present,” he said, “Asia alone accounts for over 75% of some 110 million wireless data subscribers worldwide.”

According to Mr Tsang, Hong Kong is ideally placed to promote the further development of wireless services in Asia. Hong Kong boasts a world-class wireless infrastructure, an extremely competitive market, enterprises with keen entrepreneurial spirit and a savvy population always receptive to innovative products and services.

“Yet, it is access to the Mainland China market that makes Hong Kong uniquely positioned to spearhead the development of wireless content and applications,” said Mr Tsang. Hong Kong’s cultural affinity, language capability, business know-how and international outlook mean its businesspeople are well equipped to produce wireless goods for the Mainland market.

Mr Tsang called for close collaboration of all the relevant players, including government, equipment suppliers, wireless operation, application and content providers and the IT industry.

“The establishment of the Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre provides a focal point for co-operation of all the actors I have mentioned,” he said. “Together we will seek to accelerate the development of wireless services in Hong Kong, and in turn, in Asia and in the world.”
