Hong Kong: Premier Trade Fair Capital

Hong Kong is regarded as a popular city for international conferences and a premier trade fair capital, said the Hong Kong Permanent Secretary for Commerce Industry and Technology, Miss Denise Yue.

Speaking at the opening of the “Source It” trade fair, organized by the ASEAN Federation of Textiles Industries and Messe Frankfurt, Miss Yue assured her audience that Hong Kong was committed to continuously enhancing its trade fair appeal by providing a first-class infrastructure and a business-friendly environment.

For example, the international exhibition centre at Chek Lap Kok International Airport, Asia World-Expo, will provide 66,000 square metres of space when fully operational in early 2006. State-of-the-art venues combine with Hong Kong’s superb accessibility to the vast markets of the mainland, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea, and close proximity to the Pearl River Delta to make it an ideal meeting spot for buyers and exhibitors.

Miss Yue emphasized the importance of the textiles industry in Hong Kong, saying that, “Hong Kong is both a leading production centre and a global hub for the sourcing of textile and clothing.” She pointed out that the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement offers benefits for overseas textiles and clothing manufacturers to conduct the origin-conferring manufacturing processes in Hong Kong to enjoy the zero-tariff preference.

She added that “manufacturers based in Hong Kong will have access to the whole range of sophisticated and world-class trade-related and professional services that Hong Kong can offer.”
