Hong Kong Update Fall/Winter 2012

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Canada have signed an agreement for the comprehensive avoidance of double taxation (CDTA). It is Hong Kong's 26th and Canada's 91st. The treaty, expected to further boost trade and investment between the two economies, will come into force once it completes all necessary ratification procedures on both sides.

The Central Government announced in late June, prior to a visit by President Hu Jintao to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), a package of more than 30 measures to further strengthen co-operation between the Mainland and Hong Kong. The package covers the areas of trade, finance, education, science, technology, tourism and Hong Kong-Guangdong co-operation, crucial to the sustainable development of the city's economy and community.

The Heritage Foundation recently ranked Hong Kong as the world's freest economy for the 18th consecutive year since 1995. According to its 2012 Index of Economic Freedom released in mid-January 2012, Hong Kong scored an impressive 89.9 (on a scale from 0 to 100), well above the world average of 59.5.
