Films Represent “Hong Kong Spirit"

HKETO Deputy Director, Mr. Kenneth Cheng, told the audience attending the Vancouver HKFF that the setbacks Hong Kong has suffered from in recent years could not dent the 'Hong Kong Spirit'.At the Vancouver opening of “Gems from Asia’s Hollywood - A Retrospect of John Woo" Deputy Director of the HKETO, Mr Kenneth Cheng, described the film festival as representative of the resilient, unquenchable Hong Kong Spirit.

“In the face of adversity, we rise to the challenge, use our creativity and ingenuity and come out stronger than before," said Mr Cheng. Hong Kong’s film industry and its professionals similarly traveled a long journey to international recognition, having faced cultural and language barriers, differences in industry practices and keen competition.

“Now, many of our movie stars and behind-the-scenes professionals are Hollywood’s recent success stories," pointed out Mr Cheng.

The Hong Kong Film Festival, co-presented by the HKETO and Pacific Cinematheque, aimed to illustrate the developments and recognize the achievements of Hong Kong’s film industry. It also marked the 6th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Before its Vancouver opening, the film festival was also staged in Toronto and Calgary.
