Hearty Congratulations to Hong Kong-born U of T Chancellor

The Hong Kong Secretary for Justice, Ms Elsie Leung, extended her hearty congratulations to Senator Vivienne Poy on being installed the new Chancellor of the University of Toronto.

Representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and its people, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice, Ms Elsie Leung, seized the opportunity of her visit to Toronto on November 19 to personally congratulate Senator Vivienne Poy on being awarded a Ph.D. and being installed as the new Chancellor of the University of Toronto.

As soon as her session with academics and university students at the University of Toronto’s Munk Centre for International Studies came to a close, Secretary Leung lost no time in extending her hearty congratulation to Senator Poy.

It was only after some very friendly exchanges that all present realized that the two leaders had known each other since childhood and that they even studied in the same school in Hong Kong.

Joining Secretary Leung in congratulating Senator Poy, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO), Mr Bassanio So, said he was pleased to know that the Hong Kong-born Senator had chosen “Calling Canada Home: The history of change in Canadian immigration law with respect to refugees from South China and Hong Kong between 1860 and 1990” as the topic of her Ph.D. thesis.

“It is a topic close to the heart of Senator Poy as a distinguished Canadian with Hong Kong roots,” Mr So said.

He said that it was an honour for Hong Kong to have a Hong Kong-born Chancellor head the largest university in Canada.

“I am sure that the Chinese community in Canada will join the HKETO in wishing Senator Poy the very best for the future,” Mr So added.
