Hong Kong-Montreal Partnership Enhanced

The "Building a Dynamic Hong Kong" photo exhibition, was opened in October in Montreal to feature Hong Kong's infrastructure achievements, present and future.

Canadian businesses planning to tap the huge Mainland China market are strongly encouraged to partner with Hong Kong companies to leverage the unique advantages Hong Kong enjoys under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) recently signed between Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Mr Bassanio So, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO), communicated this important message to business leaders and senior company executives in Montreal in October at a luncheon that formed part of a HKETO promotion entitled “Hong Kong & Montreal – A Developing Partnership”.

The promotion took place October 20-29 and featured the business luncheon and a large-scale photo exhibition, “Building a Dynamic Hong Kong”, which introduced Hong Kong’s infrastructure achievements, present and future, at the Complexe Desjardins.

At the luncheon, Mr So advised the Montreal business community on the tremendous opportunities available to them in Hong Kong and China, especially in the Pearl River Delta region, now one of the world’s largest manufacturing bases.

Mr So outlined the advantages of Hong Kong under the CEPA free trade agreement, such as the zero import tariffs on goods and services in selected sectors. He urged Canadian companies interested in investing in Greater China to use Hong Kong as their headquarters to co-ordinate their production or other operations in the PRD and further expands into other parts of China.

This latest promotion was designed to further develop the partnership between Hong Kong and Montreal following HKETO’s successful cultural promotion in 2002, featuring a Cantonese opera.
