Helping Business

The Helping Business Programme was launched by the Financial Secretary in 1996 with a view to maintaining Hong Kong as the best place in the world for business, and making the government genuinely business friendly.

Substantial progress was made in 1997:

Leading businessmen and senior government officials meet quarterly in the Business Advisory Group to take forward helping business issues such as deregulation, assessment of cost of compliance and transfer of public services to the private sector

The Business and Services Promotion Unit was established in May to be a permanent support organization

Eight 'helping business' studies completed during the year - target for 1998 is 14

Some 90 specific recommendations implemented, leading to a wide range of improved practices in many government departments

A symposium held in November for all top government officials to cultivate a 'helping business' culture
