A Services Economy

Hong Kong has a burgeoning and sophisticated services economy:

More than 80% of GDP derived from services

Nearly 80% of all jobs in services sector

World's 9th largest exporter of services, second only to Japan in Asia

Prominent financial sector - second largest stock market in Asia; fourth largest banking centre; fifth largest foreign exchange market

Most popular tourist destination in Asia

One of the world's most prolific film and entertainment production centres

The government strives to put in place the right policies and programmes to promote Hong Kong as the pre-eminent regional services centre:

A dedicated Business and Services Promotion Unit to support and co-ordinate government initiatives

A Services Promotion Strategy Group - comprising leading businessmen, prominent academics and senior government officials - meets quarterly to spearhead services promotion strategies

An annual Action Agenda to ensure timely implementation for priority initiatives. Agenda items for 1997-98 include studies on manpower and training needs, a new business park and additional convention facilities

On-going publicity campaigns to reinforce international recognition and foster local understanding
