UK Parliament Told Freedom Upheld in Hong Kong

A recent report delivered to the United Kingdom Parliament stated that, under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, the Basic Law is being faithfully implemented and freedom upheld in Hong Kong.

The six-monthly report on Hong Kong by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office examined the exercise of power by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) regarding the term of office of Hong Kong’s new Chief Executive. Noting that seeking an interpretation through the judicial process was prohibitive, in terms of time, the report concluded that gaining NPCSC interpretation was the only viable option and that it had not affected the independence of the Judiciary or, generally, Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy.

Parliamentarians were updated about efforts to engage the Hong Kong public in discussions on electoral arrangements for 2007/2008, the progress of the proposed Race Discrimination Bill and moves taken towards the realisation of the Paris Principles on human rights.
