HKETO Forges Links with Ottawa 

During a February visit to Ottawa, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (Canada), Mr. Bassanio So, met with Canada’s federal Opposition leader and the mayor of Ottawa to discuss ways of forging stronger links between Canada’s capital city and Asia’s world city, Hong Kong.

At a meeting with the Hon. Stephane Dion to discuss strengthening relations between Canada and Hong Kong,  Mr Bassanio So  emphasizes on the importance of Hong Kong as Canada's Asia Pacific partner.During his talks with the Hon. Stephane Dion, Mr. So discussed strengthening relations between Canada and Hong Kong. He emphasized the importance of Hong Kong as Canada’s Asia-Pacific partner, especially with the presence of 250,000 of Canadian passport holders in the Special Administrative Region. He added that, with 150 Canadian companies operating in Hong Kong, and another 450 companies being represented there, it makes Hong Kong the largest Canadian overseas business community in Asia.

Mr. Bassanio So presenting a souvenir book to Mayor Larry O'Brien of Ottawa after the meeting.During a meeting with Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien, Mr. So talked about how the issues of commercialization of technology and the modernization of the mass transit railway system could help build stronger business ties between the Canadian capital and Asia’s world city, Hong Kong.

Joining this meeting were Mr. Michael Murr, Manager of Economic Development of the City of Ottawa; Mr. Michael Darch, Executive Director of the Ottawa Centre of Research and Innovation; and Mr. Frank Ling, founding president of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, Ottawa Section. 

The group also discussed how Hong Kong can help Ottawa tap into the China market in the areas of technology transfer, environmental protection, waste-to-energy production, engineering and innovation.
