Hong Kong Athletes’ Olympic Performance Praised

At the Welcome Home Ceremony for the Hong Kong SAR Delegation to the Olympic Games, the Hong Kong Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, praised the 33-strong group’s can-do spirit and told them, “Hong Kong people are proud of you all.”

Mr Tung praised table tennis doubles players, Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak, who won an historic silver medal in Athens. He also paid tribute to Lee Lai-shan’s spirit of tenacity, and said that cyclist Wong Kam-po’s quest to outperform a host of strong rivals was inspirational.

Remarking that winning was good, but that participation and giving of one’s utmost is even more important, Mr Tung said the unflinching courage of Hong Kong’s 33 local athletes had “brought themselves and the whole community immense spiritual wealth and momentum.”

The recent Olympics have aroused public interest in sport developments in Hong Kong and Mr Tung noted that the HKSAR Government is considering ways to further promote the sports-for-all concept, students’ participation and parental support, nurturing of elite athletes and their career opportunities, training of trainers, improvements to existing facilities and building of new ones.
