Eight of the best films recently directed by renowned Hong Kong directors will be showcased in the “Spotlight on Hong Kong” of the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) from September 24 to October 3 and in a Hong Kong Film Festival (HKFF) in Toronto from October 2-8 in Toronto.
The former is organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO) and the Calgary International Film Festival, while the latter is jointly presented by the HKETO and the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto (CCC), with the full support of the Royal Ontario Museum.
Announcing details of the two film events, the Director of the HKETO, Mr Bassanio So, described Hong Kong as “Asia’s Hollywood” and said, “We hope that by bringing these high-quality productions by such renowned Hong Kong directors as Johnnie To, Sylvia Chang, Carol Lai and Derek Yee, which have not been commercially released in North America, the events will give our Canadian friends a better understanding and appreciation of our film professionals whose talents enjoy worldwide recognition.”
Both events will include a seminar on Hong Kong-Canada co-production to examine how Canadian filmmakers and movie companies can make use of Hong Kong to explore the vast Asian market, especially the China market. At the seminar, Mr So will join professional panel speakers to examine the advantages of co-production with Hong Kong; the practical issues pertaining to such co-productions; and the strengths of Hong Kong as a film marketing and distribution centre.
The CIFF “Spotlight on Hong Kong” is fully supported by the Fairchild Media Group as its producer. The event’s media sponsors are CHKF, FM94.7, Sing Tao Daily and Trend Weekly.
The Hong Kong Film Festival is supported by Tour East (Holiday) as special sponsor; Pacific Insurance Brokers Inc., RBC Financial Group, Living Realty Inc. and Downtown Fine Car Group as silver screen sponsors; and Fairchild Media Group, Ming Pao and World Journal as media sponsors.
Proceeds of the HKFF in Toronto will be donated to the CCC for its Phase II development.
