Mr Bassanio So meets with the Federal Industry Minister, the Hon David Emerson, to explore mutual ways for Canadian industries to capitalise on Hong Kong's advantages in accessing the China market.
In a series of meetings with provincial and federal ministers, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada) (HKETO), Mr Bassanio So, explored ways in which economic and trade ties between Canada and Hong Kong could be further strengthened.

Mr So met with the Federal Minister of Industry, the Hon David Emerson, in Vancouver on August 12 to explore how Canadian industries can capitalize on Hong Kong’s advantages to access the China market.

Updating Minister Emerson on the latest economic developments in Hong Kong and its integration with the Pearl River Delta, Mr So discussed with him ways to foster closer bilateral economic and trade ties between Canada and Hong Kong.

Mr So also communicated the potential advantages for Canadian companies under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement signed between Hong Kong and the Mainland.

In Toronto on September 10, Director So met with the Minister of International Trade, The Hon Jim Peterson, for a discussion focusing on ways that Canadian businesses can leverage Hong Kong’s advantages to reach the China market.

“Hong Kong offers great opportunities for Canadian firms, especially those in high value-added or high-tech sectors,” said Mr So. “Hong Kong has a well-established financial and legal framework.” He pointed out that co-operating with a Hong Kong partner provides foreign businesspeople with instant business contacts in China and ensures faster access to the China market.

Mr So said: “Ontario has been very successful in promoting high-tech sectors, e.g. the high-tech belt linking Ottawa, Toronto and the Waterloo-Kitchener region. Hong Kong offers great opportunities for these Canadian firms to gain instant access to the Chinese market.”
