Speaking after the third election of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo), held September 12, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, expressed his wish to develop close ties with all members of the legislature. “All my colleagues, the entire HKSAR Government and I, look forward to working closely with the new LegCo in the next term to serve the people of Hong Kong.”
Stressing that “economic revival, social harmony and the birth of the new legislature are what the people of Hong Kong would like to see,” Mr Tung said: “We will join hands with our legislators and members of the community and spare no effort to maintain the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.”
About 55.63% of Hong Kong’s 3.2 million registered electors cast their votes, exceeding that of the 2002 election. Hong Kong’s Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, said the high turnout boosted the representative nature of the new legislature and provided impetus to the development of democracy in Hong Kong.
Mr Lam described the election as a new milestone for Hong Kong’s constitutional development, as the election achieved a new record – a very high participation rate both in terms of candidates standing for the election and in terms of voter turnout.
