A study of projected temperature changes by the Hong Kong Observatory has shown a trend of rising temperatures consistent with the projected warming of the entire globe.
By the last decade of this century, the annual mean temperature in Hong Kong is expected to rise by 3.5 degrees Celsius above the 1961-1990 average of 23.0 degrees Celsius.
The Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Yeung Kai-hing, said in a briefing on August 19 that the study utilized the results of supercomputer simulations of future climate made by major climate centres around the world. These centres in the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, Australia and Japan had carried out simulations of the future climate, including temperature, using global climate models forced with different greenhouse gas emission scenarios.
Mr Yeung said that, by the decade 2090-2099, “Roughly speaking, there will not be a single cold day in eight out of every 10 years.”
