With the launch on July 25 of the Action Blue Sky Campaign, the Chief Executive of the HKSARG, Mr Donald Tsang, called on the whole community to work with the Government to improve Hong Kong's air quality. "Every small step taken by each individual to support the clean-air initiatives in our daily lives can help reduce air pollution," he said.
Mr Tsang's goals include reducing electricity consumption in government offices by at least 1.5% in 2006. He urged the private sector to join in, pointing out that saving energy results in both financial and environmental benefits.
In a "Letter to Hong Kong - Choosing Cleaner Air" broadcast on Radio Television Hong Kong Mr Tsang declared that, "We can shape our future with the choices we make."
The fact that the lion's share of Hong Kong's air pollution comes from the Pearl River Delta has prompted the two governments to join forces to establish an emissions reduction scheme to tackle the problem at source. "Our common goal," said Mr Tsang, "is to significantly cut emissions of four major pollutants by the year 2010."
Hong Kong has cracked down on smoky vehicles and encouraged taxis and minibuses to switch to liquefied petroleum gas and steps have been taken to make power plants more environmentally-friendly.
And yet, Mr Tsang acknowledged, "much, much more needs to be done." He urged his listeners to make choices that have an impact on the environment, such as using public transport, switching off unused computers, turning off idling cars and opening windows instead of using air conditioners. “We all have a stake in restoring our blue sky. So, let's shape the future with smarter choices. Say to yourself: "I choose cleaner air."
The Action Blue Sky Campaign, with the slogan “Clean Air for a Cool Hong Kong!” is organized by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). The comprehensive program includes publicity and educational activities, roving exhibitions, poster and leaflet distribution and workshops.
